I read an interesting article a while back on the matter and was amazed at some of what I've found. It describes and analyzes the fact that less and less females in the US are pursuing CS education or are interested in a CS related career, something that is seen in our reality. Interestingly the reasons mentioned are almost the same that we observe: bad education that fails to capture and convey the fact that CS is essentially logical thinking, math and problem solving, assumptions about previous technical computing experience which hinders newcomers that may not necessarily have it, male stereotypes and male-dominated legacy common to other sciences and engineering fields. I believe that inherent psychological differences between the two genders aren't a clue against aptitude, in fact much of the studies in this vein still remain controversial. Therefore there's no clear and fair argument against whether or not females possess the same abilities males do, so one should search for reasons elsewhere. I was lucky enough to have met very enthusiastic female fellow students albeit very few, and quite unsurprisingly all have a background of interest in mathematics, but I'm not sure about the part females will play in the local CS industry in the near feature. What do you think?

First of all:
I don't believe that you're quoting a singer (Geoff Tate) in your signature talking about things he doesn't really know anything about.
Back to the thread topic:
I don't know if there is a biological difference between male brain and female brain.
But statistics have always shown that men do better in fields that require logical thinking (like programming).
I think that programming especially is male dominated field just like taxi driving and mining I'm not sure why but that what statistics shows.

I don't know what makes you not comment on my sig in a PM. Are we that inconvenient with PMs? Don't get too analytic about what you read in my sig. Even though it hints at certain abuse we witness everday, it is just a lyric line I liked and put it in there. I'll remove it right now. As for the topic, I'm not really willing to drift into the realm of mental and psychological differences because I'm not a disciple of either field and no one here is. So are you saying that females are less logical than males.. ? Can you please mention one possible source of statistics, if that's possible?

Why I'm not seeing any sign of further interest in this topic?!

Actually I don’t have statistical information about the relation between gender and the logical thinking, but if I make a look around, I can’t mention any girl interested in programming or has excellent skills with, most of them are interested in theoretical and humane issues, not analytical and logical ones (I mean mathematics and programming). Anyway, we can’t make a rule, and there are exceptions. It will be so nice if we hear a women’s voice …what about Nadia , where are you Nadia ?

I thought that this topic might draw more attention. Come on people let's hear more opinions. Don't constrain yourselves to English if you don't feel like writing in English.

Oh where was I when you first started this interesting topic?!! Well as far as I noticed, there are quite few girls interested in math, that doesn't mean females are not good in math, but some of them are not that interested... My brother is a forth year student in mathematical statistics faculty, he told me there are 18 girls and 2 guys in the third year, and girls are getting the highest marks, this might be a coincidence. Anyway I believe females can be as good as males, even though there are many obstacles against females. I think many guys study CS not because they are interested in math or programming, but because they believe they have to, because they need to work, CS field will give them more opportunities, while girls won't feel the same way because most of them don't feel that they need to work, they'll prefer a more easy way of working.

This is actually an interesting topic. I just want to add a couple of links to information on Ada Lovelace. This is the wikipedia entry on her, and on this page (eccentrics in the history of computers) there is some info about her as well. Basically, Ada is said to have been the first programmer. They say : " The first programmer was a woman". The language Ada is named after her, and was approved on Ada Lovelace's birthday. Ada was the daughter of one of the most famous eccentrics of all time, Lord Byron. This invokes a comment : back when I was an English major, Lord Byron was the man of the hour, and no one mentioned Ada, not even as a footnote; Nowdays, however, Ada is the first hacker, the one who wrote the first algorithm for a computer, thought up subroutines and recursion, and also presented the first logical objection to strong AI; Byron, on the other hand, if anyone bothers to mention him at all, is the footnote. Deservedly so, god how I hated his poetry.
