Sun Microsystems has announced JavaFX, a new suite of technologies for creating Rich Internet Applications. JavaFX Script, a new scripting language aimed at creating RIAs, will have many interesting features, including compiling to Java bytecode on the client machine and the ability to execute its programs off-line. The JavaFX framework will be in direct competition with Adobe's Apollo and Microsoft's Silverlight RIA frameworks. The battle for internet applications is underway.

No, this is a different story, it's closer to Flash.
(Besides Sun has nothing to do with AJAX and JavaScript)
There are some things that you can't do with JavaScript and you need something like Flash for them (YouTube uses Flash for instance).
Microsoft have decided to target this segment of the market and compete directly with Flash (Actually they're developing a new set of products that compete with almost every Adobe product out there).
And maybe Sun found that it can do whatever Microsoft is doing with .NET with their JVM (after all .NET is "inspired" from Java) and decided to give MS a taste of its own medicine Smile
But the question is what has happened to Java applets?!!!

This new language looks like it's easier than Java to learn and use. Perhaps it is a new way of getting Java browser Applets back in the market!
