In the article, the authors present their arguments and give evidence to neglection entailed by contemporary computer science education to basic skills, in particular in the areas of programming and formal methods. They attribute partial responsibility of the decline to the general adoption of Java as a first programming language in curricula. They briefly outline the set of programming skills that should, in their view, be part of every software professional’s repertoire.
