Couldn't configure and use StarDict for some reason, moreover, I'm not sure that the use of all of its available dictionaries is legal... :/
I still use dict to serve definitions to others on my LAN as well, and my dict clients are KDE kdict and a special Emacs mode to be used when I'm in Emacs.
Surprisingly, I've found no good French or French bilingual dictionaries but a late 19th century Littré. *sigh*

Did I say it's wrong to use freely available dicos? No, I did not.

But the fact is that there aren't good freely available ones for all languages, not even for English if you're very serious about your use of the language; The Collaborative International Dictionary of English (GCIDE) or WordNet are seen by many as of questionable quality. Of course there are very good online ones, for which one needs to stay connected in order to use, for example Dictionnaire de l'Académie française and Webster. I know I can use them quite a bit now that I have free 24/7 internet connection at the masters class in the college... *pats himelf on the back* Mr. Green

It's like you're reading my mind. Smile

Stardict is great because it has converters from many dictionary formats, and therefore has many great dictionaries.
