There's no real difference between the scores of U.S. boys and girls on common math tests, according to a massive new study.
What do you think about that in the faculty of Computer Science in Syria?

اقتباس:
But it did suggest that boys were better at solving more complex problems by the time they got to high school.
اقتباس:
The results "essentially confirm" earlier studies--and they should finally put to rest the idea that girls aren't going into technical fields because they can't do the math, says Ann Gallagher, a psychologist who studies testing at the Law School Admission Council in Newtown, Pennsylvania. But she still thinks there may be cultural or psychological reasons for why girls still tend to lag behind boys on high-stakes tests such as the SAT. Among students she's observed, she says "the boys tend to be a little more idiosyncratic in solving problems, the girls more conservative in following what they've been taught."
I actually have found that some girls are slow in observing the knowledge, while most of the boys don't suffer of that problem.
OTOH some girls are really smart but alas they're too shy to show themselves and they're just a few.
Maybe it's as said in the report may be cultural or psychological reasons.

اقتباس: Overall, the researchers found "no gender difference" I agree with this .. I don't think that gender affects the level of smart .. but I think we're mixing up here two things : 1-Smart 2-Observing knowledge."as said before" I think the smart isn't related to gender. Its a human feature, but the Observing knowledge isn't. It's something related to culture & personality .. for instance, Arab countries in the 40's didn't have that amount of educated men nor women , but nowadays we see that this amount is becoming more. اقتباس: I actually have found that some girls are slow in observing the knowledge, while most of the boys don't suffer of that problem. I don't think this is right .. girls don't suffer of such problem , in our countries, Most of the girls suffer of "artificial shy and lying " this is the magical mixture they treat boys with. That what you see as slow in learning. Among my first year in FIT I faced such genius girls and hardworking ones with no slow learning ..it's up to the personality it's not a congenital thing.

I find the study fair enough. Personally, I can say that I have encountered equal numbers of smart and dumb people from both sexes in my academic, professional and familial circles, which further strengthens my conviction about equal mental abilities of females and males.
كتب mpcabd: I actually have found that some girls are slow in observing the knowledge, while most of the boys don't suffer of that problem. That was a pretty random and vague remark. What's "observing knowledge" supposed to mean? Yet shashi happily amplifies it... People do not observe knowledge, but phenomenae and data, interpret it as information and internalize it as knowledge. Nevertheless, I have not seen nor read about any substantial evidence of inherently weaker observtion, interpretation and internalization feminin skills. كتب mpcabd: OTOH some girls are really smart but alas they're too shy to show themselves and they're just a few.Maybe it's as said in the report may be cultural or psychological reasons. I quite agree with you on emphasizing that point. It is no secret how horribly the role of females is downplayed in a cultural environement like ours which confines it squareley into the familial cell, and personally speaking, it turns my stomach to see how this marginalization is often made under the veil of religion, and from a very young age, so that the female subject develops a solid conviction that she is inferior to men, and that her sole ambition should be housework, pleasing the husband and raising children. I'd suggest dragging this thread to the active members forum lest discussion proliferates in multiple, some would argue off-topic, posts.

What I meant was: when a teacher explains some theory or some scientific method you would see more girls doing this than boys, this is from our faculty perspective I don't mean the whole community, 'cuz I know great women who are sometimes smarter that a bunch of men.

I found this great article which was released just yesterday in the NYtimes ... and I quoted these ..it's related to the posted article here اقتباس: we don’t see gender differences in test performance اقتباس: “But people are surprised by these findings, which suggests to me that the stereotypes are still there.” اقتباس: The SAT is taken primarily by seniors bound for college, and since more girls than boys go to college, about 100,000 more girls than boys take the test, including lower-achieving girls who bring down the girls’ average score. You can read the full report here

[First of all i wanna thank u for this interesting topic though I expected more opinions :S
كتب strontium90: It is no secret how horribly the role of females is downplayed in a cultural environement like ours which confines it squareley into the familial cell, and personally speaking, it turns my stomach to see how this marginalization is often made under the veil of religion, and from a very young age, so that the female subject develops a solid conviction that she is inferior to men, and that her sole ambition should be housework, pleasing the husband and raising children.
you've just hit the main problem that faces girls at our society, unfortunately,it's true that girls living such a lie, that they are constructed with those borders of raising children ,houseworking and being the machine to satisfy MISOGYNIST Perspective, and in my opinion this thing is not the result of males thinking only, but there are so many females that cause this kind of passive thinking :S
We all know that there are physical differences in the brain of the two genders, but that doesnt mean that one is better than the other, and if we cant find many girls in our CS Faculty it is a normal result for the social problems that we talked about.
finally, hopefully thinking there is a noticable improve in our Faculty with the number of females beside their competence
BTW plzz Shashi could u explain this more coz I didnt get ur idea :S
كتب shashi: in our countries, Most of the girls suffer of " artificial shy and lying " this is the magical mixture they treat boys with. That what you see as slow in learning.
Those wasted moments wont return
And we will never feel again

Strangely non of the commentators in this thread have mentioned math which is the main point of the study this thread is about!
And you've went to discuss discrimination against women, which I think can't be fully discussed in our forum due to the nature and rules of this forum.
But let's just keep in mind that as everything in life there is usually two extreme point of views (and they're usually wrong) and one moderate point of view (which is usually correct) although sometimes the moderate point of view would have the fewest followers.

كتب foaad: Strangely non of the commentators in this thread have mentioned math which is the main point of the study this thread is about! Well I was Just About to mention it ... IMO when it comes to math & Logic I could see that it's more easy for boys to observing the knowledge.
كتب vampireheart.69: We all know that there are physical differences in the brain of the two genders, but that doesnt mean that one is better than the other Well I guess it's fair enough for girls . All of us know the gift from God to the female to have the multipipeline of hearing & understanding in spite of other psychological & Thinking Problems

At the end of this post the only real conclusion I can draw is that:
IMAO , boys do extremely well in the fields where physical and reasoning powers are most likely needed. In the opposite, girls excel in the arenas that require emotions and a strong memory.

but it accords to their passion and willpower

And you've went to discuss discrimination against women, which I think can't be fully discussed in our forum due to the nature and rules of this forum. The study BEN ADAM has pointed at has already said what could have been said; there's no scientific evidence as to representatives of which sex perform better on math examinations. I and the ladies have elaborated onto an important cultural context because alleged gender differences are often set on that ground for a variety of reasons and motives, and you just confirmed that religious aspects have a fair share of blame by pointing out the impossibility of exploring this theme in a forum forbidding discussions of religious nature.

Yes, extremist views can sadly be read in the answers of certain members who have chimed into this thread, who are neither mathematicians nor educationists nor psychologists, but who have permitted themselves to make bald statements in favor of superior masculine abilities of "thinking" and "observing the knowledge", unlike the scientific study, made by domain experts, which was inconclusive in its attempt to ascertain any differences between masculine and feminine performance in mathematics.

No I didn't confirm that.
But I knew that some of you would like to jump and blame religion for it, and some of you would like to defend religion, which will lead to -as you've said- discussions of religious nature, which are banned by forum rules.
But just let me remind all of you that this rule does not mean you can bash religion in this forum, so let's just keep our remarks about religion out of this forum.

As far as I can see, no one "bashed" religion in this thread, and the reference I made was not a criticism targetted at the very nature of any religion, but a blame on a certain "culture" which encourages marginalization of females under religious excuses, itselves often refuted. But I can clearly see that some can bypass evidence presented by a scientific study and defend biased views unsupported neither by statistical significance and rigor nor by a valid observation made in a cultural environment that would maintain a neutral stance.

look dear, we are talking about our community, and our faculties.
Nobody agreed that there is a gap between the two sexes in natural, but most agreed that our community and our cultures create that gap by putting a veil of wrong ideas over the girls' minds.
And everybody said that there are some girls who aren't affected by those ideas but they are a few.
