LONDON (Reuters) - Britain could give all computer games cinema-style age ratings to protect children from increasingly realistic and violent titles, the government said on Thursday.
British Culture Minister Margaret Hodge said the rise of adult-themed games with grown-up plots and advanced graphics had made the old warning system obsolete. Ministers have come under pressure to tighten regulation with the release of violent games like "Grand Theft Auto IV," a sprawling gangster adventure featuring car-jackings, prostitutes and drive-by shootings. Software giant Microsoft has unveiled DirectX 11 at its GamesFest event in Redmond, Washington. It is the successor to the older DirectX 10 and 10.1. DirectX is a collection of application program interfaces (APIs) that is used by hardware to interface with multimedia software and 3D games. Some of the APIs include Direct3D, DirectPlay, DirectSound and DirectDraw. Some of DirectX 11's features are general purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU), tessellation support and improved multi-threading support. GPGPU enables compatible GPUs to perform computation tasks that were traditionally handled by the computer's CPU. Tessellation on the other hand allows developers to make models appear smoother and more realistic when viewed up close, while multi-threading support makes it possible for developers to better utilise multi-core processors. Sony Japan has released the firmware version 4.0 for its Sony PSP console. The new firmware allows you to adjust the video playback to slow motion at 0.5X the speed or FF at 2X speed with its new “up” and “down” keys on the screen. Operation is possible only for video recorder on the Memory Stick and not on UMD’s. Another thing will be the long awaited Google search button, yeah, it is added too and also stores previous 20 searches.

Good news to all Wii owners. Due to the success of Wii game console, Nintendo has launched WiiWare, a software service for games. Wii owners who have their console connect to the internet will be able to download games from both large developers and small shops. Looks like Nintendo is ready to compete with Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade and Sony’s PlayStation Store

قررت شركة مايكروسوفت العملاقة للصناعات الإلكترونية السبت، تمديد فترة ضمان لعبة الفيديو الجديدة Xbox 360 إلى ثلاث سنوات، في خطوة ستكلفها قرابة مليار دولار، وذلك بعد اكتشاف مجموعة من العيوب البنيوية. ويمثل هذا الإعلان سقطة جديدة لوحدة الترفية وإنتاج الآلات الخاصة بمايكروسوفت المتعثرة أصلاً، والتي أنتجت منذ نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني 2005، قرابة 11.6 مليون لعبة من هذا الطراز. Good news to all South Korean gamers as South Korea will be the first country to receive an 80GB Sony PlayStation 3 on 16th June. The system will go for $550 and will have support for IPTV. The basic model of the PlayStation 3 has a 20 GB hard drive, while the premium model comes with a 60GB hard drive. The new 80GB PS3 will also be available in North America, Europe, The Middle East, Japan and Africa. Let’s see who will be the next one to receive the 80GB PS3.

Blizzard has announced StarCraft 2 at their packed event in Seoul, South Korea. IGN is liveblogging the event, describing gameplay footage being played as well as full cinematics. From the description of ongoing events there are massive changes to the way the game plays, new units, a physics system within the game engine, and the capability to show over 100 units onscreen at a time. اطلقت شركة Id Software النص المصدري كاملا للعبة Quake 3 Arena تحت رخصة GPL، وقد اعتادت هذه الشركة على اطلاق النصوص المصدرية لألعابها السابقة بعد اطلاق لعبة جديدة مبنية على محرك جديد، الجدير بالذكر ان محرك لعبة Quake 3 Area هو من اكثر المحركات التي تم ترخيصها على الاطلاق لبناء العاب اخرى، و سيكون اطلاق النص المصدري فرصة لمطوري البرامج الحرة في انتاج العاب مفتوحة المصدر مبنية على المحرك، و للمتعلمين في دراسة و تفحص النص المصدري لمحرك العاب كان يعتبر وقت اطلاقه افضل المحركات اداء و ميزات.
