New Microsoft/Yahoo! Deal? Yes, No, Maybe?

And you thought a deal between Microsoft and Yahoo was over and done with?

Not so fast.

Microsoft has signaled that it is willing to sweeten its previous offer for a partial buyout of Yahoo's search business, according to one major investor who has been in contact with both parties.

Neither Microsoft nor Yahoo had immediate comment

After the termination of discussions with Microsoft less than two weeks ago, Yahoo's board said in a statement that a sale leaving the company without an independent search business "would not be in the best interests of Yahoo stockholders."

Wikia Search, the open source Web search engine, this week announced new features that will give users even greater control over search results.

The changes, unveiled Tuesday, let users edit, comment on, add, and delete search results. Wikia, formerly Wikicities, released its alpha version of an open source search engine in January. The company said this week that it has attracted about 20,000 registered users who have written nearly 25,000 mini-articles and made almost 60,000 edits.

The company hopes the recent changes will increase user engagement and make search more interactive.

You, yes you webmaster, you are warned, that Internet Explorer 8 will have its next public release, Beta 2, in Q3. Why the warning? Well, as you recall, Internet Explorer 8 will be standards-compliant, and will be released in that mode by default. Since many web sites are coded to IE’s quirks, webmasters will have to add some code to force IE8 into IE7 emulation mode if they want it to render as IE7 did.

Can’t buy Yahoo! (at least for now)? Buy search users instead.

Microsoft has launched a service called “Live Search Cashback.” The program is linked to Microsoft’s acquisition of Jellyfish.com last year, a cashback site similar to eBates, where rebates of varying percentages are given for purchases clicked-through from the site. This probably explains why the cashback portion of Jellyfish has been down of late — and is down again today.

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Sunday it has reached out to Yahoo (YHOO.O: Quote, Profile, Research) about an alternative deal that would not involve a full acquisition, in a move that could save the web pioneer from fighting a proxy battle with financier Carl Icahn.

Microsoft said it was not proposing to make a new bid to buy all of Yahoo "but reserves the right to reconsider that alternative" depending on discussions with Yahoo, shareholders of Yahoo or Microsoft, or other third parties.

Microsoft did not disclose the nature of its contact with Yahoo in a short statement it issued "in light of developments" since the company withdrew its Yahoo bid two weeks ago.Microsoft said it is continuing to explore and pursue alternatives to improve and expand its online services and advertising business.
